Accessibility at Handspan
Last updated: October 4, 2026
We are working toward WCAG 2.2 Level AA for the web interface and accessible native Android behavior. This page describes support and known limitations. It is not an ADA certification or a claim that every WCAG criterion has been met. Some features depend on the browser, operating system and service configuration.
Ways to pair and share
- Enter or paste the receiver's readable code instead of scanning a QR image or using a camera.
- Browse for files with the system picker instead of dragging and dropping.
- Use the keyboard to navigate buttons, tabs, forms and dialogs. A skip link takes you to the main transfer controls.
- Connection changes, errors and completion use text status messages; progress includes a descriptive label.
- Zoom or enlarge text. The interface has flexible layouts, visible focus, text labels and reduced-motion support.
- The Android app uses native controls and shows readable pairing information.
Receiving and saving
The receiver reviews and approves the files before their contents are sent. Depending on browser support, a save dialog appears or a verified download becomes available. Multiple files may arrive as one ZIP, which must be saved and extracted. System file dialogs and download prompts are outside Handspan's interface and can behave differently with assistive technology.
If saving to a chosen location fails, the verified download can remain available through Save. For a browser download link, Save requests a download but cannot confirm that the operating system completed it. Check Downloads and retain the original until the recipient has a saved copy. Closing the page may discard an unsaved local copy. Large batches may require browser storage that is unavailable on some devices.
Connections, retries and time limits
Temporary encrypted Cloudflare storage is selected automatically when a direct connection cannot be established. Both devices agree on the transfer method before sending files. You do not need to choose a network method. Some temporary upload or download errors are retried automatically. These retries are limited and may add waiting time before an error appears; there is not a user-adjustable retry duration. Closing or suspending the app or browser can interrupt the transfer.
Receiving invitations expire after 10 minutes. Generate a new code when an invitation expires; you can enter or paste it instead of scanning. Temporary storage sessions expire up to two hours after creation. These limits are currently fixed and cannot be extended from the interface. Needing more time may require starting again, which is a known accessibility limitation. Deletion after delivery, cancellation or expiry removes the cloud copy; it does not remove a copy you saved locally.
Testing and remaining work
Automated checks cover common markup issues on the initial web screen, guides and policy pages, including terms and privacy information. They cannot establish full accessibility conformance. Complete keyboard-only transfers, every dynamic error and approval dialog, delayed retry states, expiry announcements, 200–400% zoom, forced colors, NVDA, VoiceOver and Android TalkBack with large text still need manual release testing. Camera previews, save dialogs and download behavior also require checks on actual devices.
Get help or report a barrier
Email handspanbusiness@gmail.com. Include the screen or action, device and browser, and assistive technology if relevant. Do not include files, receiving codes, access tokens or encryption keys. We will review the issue and discuss an accessible way to help. See our privacy notice for how support information is handled.
